    MEMBER PROFILE - YVONNE RHODES
    SUBMITTED BY KATE ELDER

Yvonne Rhodes, a member of CCML since 1962, lived in many places before settling in Colorado in the early 1950's. She is a native of Edinburgh (her mother was Scottish) and at the age of 6 months, traveled with her parents to southeast Asia where her British father was a tea planter. She lived in Burma and in India until she was 5 1/2 years old. By then, she had a younger brother, and the children were sent home to England to live with relatives. This was because of the rough climate (both had malaria) and because of the lack of good schools in Burma and India. Eventually, because of ill health, her mother also returned. Her father stayed on at his plantation. Yvonne says that he was able to come home only every 3 years or so; it was a 3-week voyage from Burma to England, then. Inevitably, her parents grew apart and were divorced when Yvonne was 16.

After high school, she lived in France for several months in order to learn the language. Planning to make a career in the British Foreign Office, she decided that being fluent in several languages would help her achieve this aspiration. She went to live with a wealthy family in Germany as part of an exchange program. In return for helping the family's children with their English, she received free room and board and learned German. However, it was 1939 and her visit was cut short -- in fact, she got out only a few weeks before war was declared!

Following the war, Yvonne and her husband, an American serviceman, moved to Illinois. When they divorced, she and a girlfriend (also divorced) decided to adventure to Colorado. She began work at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center, as a secretary in the U.S. Army Medical Research and Nutrition Laboratories. After two years, she started working in the lab's small research library. Myrna Barrett, head of the Medical Library, was her supervisor. Although it took several years, Yvonne earned her library degree from the University of Denver. Myrna (who had also obtained her degree while working) encouraged her in this effort, and Yvonne is very thankful for all of Myrna's help and teachings. It was Myrna (a founding member of CCML) who urged her to join our group.

After 20 years, the research library was moved to California, and Yvonne, who wanted to stay in Colorado, was able to transfer to the Medical Library. She worked there until she retired in 1982. After retirement, Yvonne, who lived in Aurora, volunteered her help at National Jewish hospital. Several years ago, in order to be near her son and his family, she moved to a condo in Fort Collins.

Yvonne volunteers for her church (on committees and in the library), attends low-impact aerobics classes 3 times a week, and still studies French. Before breaking her hip 3 years ago, she also volunteered at the CSU library. Her home, thankfully, was not harmed during the terrible flooding last year. Her condo overlooks a beautiful meadow, which is a flood plain, and she feeds the ducks there every day. She loves to travel; among other places, she has been to New Zealand and to Russia. Last year, she and her grandchildren visited relatives in Scotland and England, and then toured gardens in France. She is very close to her sister-in-law (unfortunately, her brother died some years ago) and this May, the two of them plan to go to Puerto Rico and then take a cruise through the Caribbean.

NEW POLICIES FOR OLD MATERIALS (ARCHIVES POLICY)
    SUBMITTED BY CATHERINE REITER

Based on discussion at the February 25, 1998 membership meeting, Linda Van Wert, past President, developed guidelines for managing CCML's archives. These recommendations were presented to the executive committee on March 12, 1998. The policies and procedures that were adopted are presented below.

An ad hoc archives committee will meet annually at St. Joseph Hospital, where CCML archives are stored, to evaluate documents for permanent preservation in the archives. Margaret Bandy, Roz Dudden, and Linda Van Wert (chair) will serve as the 1998/99 archives committee. The executive committee recommends that the committee meet in July or August of each association year, to allow adequate time for incoming committee chairs and officers to forward documents to the archives committee.

The following types of documents will be retained as permanent records for the CCML archives:

Items that will not be retained in the archives include:

At the beginning of each association year, incoming officers and committee chairs review documents and transfer appropriate materials to the archives. In general, documents necessary for the officer or committee to function will be retained for one year. Earlier materials may also be retained, if they pertain to current projects.

The membership committee will add an entry for the archives to the membership database so that mailings, including meeting notices, meeting minutes, and Council Quotes, will automatically be forwarded to the archives every other month. This procedure will ensure that a new membership directory is automatically provided to the archives annually.

Items for the archives may be sent to Margaret Bandy via the CCLS courier at CC-SJHO, Denver, or mailed to her at Health Sciences Library, St. Joseph Hospital, 1835 Franklin Street, Denver, CO 80218-1191. Questions about the archives may be directed to Linda Van Wert at (303) 861-6398 or vanwert.linda@tchden.org.

CLA LEGISLATIVE WORKSHOP INVOLVES LIBRARIANS IN STATE GOVERNMENT
    SUBMITTED BY PAUL BLOMQUIST

The Colorado Library Association sponsored CLA Legislative Workshop on February 26th, updated librarians throughout the state as to the status of library funding issues currently under consideration by state legislators. In this workshop, librarians also met with their respective legislators to garner support for state library services.

The budget requests for this year includes increased funding for statewide library systems, the Colorado Resources Center, and for state institution libraries. Current funding of state library services promotes opportunities for continued education and training for all citizens, provides interlibrary loan and statewide reference services, and pays for library materials for 41 state institution libraries. Also, a request to maintain funding level of ACLIN, a statewide library and information and public access network, will assure continued access throughout the state of over 200 library catalogs as well as access to local, state and national government and non-profit organization information.

In the morning workshop, Senator Ben Alexander, Chair of the Senate Education committee gave a presentation on "Education and the Role of Libraries." Also, prominent librarians from throughout the state voiced concerns that focused on the importance and impact of state funding not only on libraries but also on all citizens seeking either personal or professional growth and life long learning. Presentations emphasized that an informed citizenry supported through statewide library activities can only strengthen Colorado as it faces the challenges and opportunities of economic, social and technological changes of the next century.

Finally, Colorado Library Association lobbyist, Patrick Steadman, of Mendez and Associates presented an update on bills before the legislature. After Mr. Steadman provided tips and guidance in how to talk with legislators, workshop participants met with their respective legislators over lunch.

The CLA legislative workshop provides librarians a chance to voice their needs to those legislators responsible for how state money is allocated and spent on state infrastructure. The involvement of the library community-special, academic and public librarians-in the legislative process strengthens the profession and promotes recognition of libraries as a state resource.

VOLUNTEER NEEDED FOR FEDERATION TASK FORCE
    SUBMITTED BY CATHERINE REITER

A second volunteer from CCML is needed for the PREZ-sponsored federation task force. Cynthia Kiyotake has agreed to serve as one of CCML's task force representatives.

The task force is charged with identifying the potential advantages and disadvantages of organizing Colorado's library associations into a federation. The advantages might include cost savings from group purchasing and other economies of scale. The disadvantages might include some loss of autonomy and independence.

Beth Hager, President of the Colorado Educational Media Association, has been appointed to chair the task force. If you are interested in representing CCML in this important endeavor, please contact Catherine Reiter at (303) 315-6444 or catherine.reiter@uchsc.edu.

    Education Committee

Members: Anne Beach, Myoung Fry, Kristen Louden, Dick Maxwell, Pat Perry (chair), Cooper Wood

The education committee surveyed CCML members via e-mail in August 1997, regarding their continuing education needs. Survey responses were used to identify continuing education events of interest to the membership. Input from the survey is still being reviewed and member concerns and questions are being addressed.

The committee sponsored seven continuing education events this year. Two mini-workshops were provided to CCML members, in conjunction with membership meetings:

Five additional courses and/or educational events were provided to CCML members.

In addition to sponsoring these continuing education activities, the committee provided CCML members with information regarding other relevant educational opportunities. Anne Beach was responsible for publishing the Colorado State Library's schedule of continuing education events in each issue of Council Quotes.

The Isabelle T Anderson (ITA) collection of library science resources was maintained by Cooper Wood, with 18 items added to the collection this year. Myoung Fry wrote reviews of selected items that were published in Council Quotes. Cooper facilitated use of the collection by displaying materials at membership meetings, making browsing and check-out easier. An ITA web page was designed, and introduced by Cooper at the October 22, 1997 membership meeting.

The membership committee accomplished a number of important tasks this year:

    Submitted by Kate Elder

    Nominating Committee

Members: Sue Coldren, Roma Marcum, Margi Stewart (Chair), Carmen Urich

A slate of candidates, including Glenn Pflum for president-elect and Sara Katsh for secretary, was presented to the executive committee on November 17, 1997. Biographies of the candidates and a review of the election process were published in the November issue of Council Quotes. The candidates were elected by voice vote at the December 10, 1997 membership meeting.

    Submitted by Margi Stewart

    Professional Issues Committee

Members: Kathy Artus, Paul Blomquist, Jenny Garcia (Chair), Susan Osborn

The professional issues committee was responsible for three objectives this year:

At the January 8, 1998 executive committee meeting, a proposal was presented to dissolve the professional issues committee and redistribute its duties to other standing committees. It was noted that, given the broad nature of the committee, objectives were difficult to identify and achieve. The executive committee agreed that individual professional issues of concern to CCML members might be better addressed by ad hoc committees and/or task forces. The major responsibilities of the professional issues committee, managing the professional development fund and library student mentoring program, could be absorbed by the education committee. This recommendation requires a bylaws change, which will be voted on by the membership at the April 22, 1998 annual meeting.

    Submitted by Jenny Garcia

    Web Page Task Force

Members: Kathy Artus, Roz Dudden, Kate Elder, Lynne Fox (chair), Mary Walsh

At the April 1997 annual meeting, the web page task force presented a report regarding the feasibility of establishing a CCML web site. A mission for the web site, based on the CCML mission, and items for potential inclusion in the web site were recommended. A motion to establish a CCML web site, including incurring the expense of establishing an Internet account with SuperNet, Inc., was approved by member vote at the April 23, 1997 annual meeting. Following the meeting, Roz Dudden initiated a CCML Internet account and distributed instructions for uploading pages to task force members. Roz and Mary Walsh scanned and uploaded artwork for the web page. Mary created the first "dummy" layout for CCML's web site during summer 1997. After review by task force members, the current layout for the web site was approved. The site is organized into three sections, Communication, Networking, and Education. Mary, Lynne, and Roz provided HTML programming skills. Kate Elder created membership information pages.

The site was formally introduced at the December 10, 1997 membership meeting. At that time, Lynne requested additional volunteers to assist with site maintenance. CCML members without HTML training were encouraged to attend classes offered by Denison Memorial Library. This request for assistance resulted in responses from Sue Coldren, Carmen Urich, and Cooper Wood. Barb Griss expressed an interest in working with the task force when her term as secretary ends. JoAnn Kruglet and Shelly Coleman also indicated interest, although they have not yet been tapped to perform specific duties. The logistics for creating a membership directory page were addressed at the January 8, 1998 executive committee meeting. Following that discussion, a release form requesting permission for member workplace information to be included in the web membership directory was sent to all CCML members. The expected completion date for the membership directory is summer 1998. The web site will largely require annual updates to maintain current information. In order to carry out ongoing maintenance and revisions in a consistent, orderly fashion, Lynne recommended that a standing Internet Committee be formed from the membership of the task force. Such a change requires a revision to the Bylaws, which will be voted on by the membership at the April 22, 1998 annual meeting.

    MAXWELL'S MUSINGS ON TELEPORTATION
SUBMITTED BY DICK MAXWELL -- OF COURSE!

Nature magazine reported recently that a couple of scientists have actually carried out history's first "teleportation." For those who haven't been loyal followers of the various "Star Trek" incarnations over the last three decades, teleportation is simply the disassembling of something here, and the reproduction of it over there. And we're not talking about what Acme Van Lines does to your credenza between your old home and your new one. This is breaking something down into its really small components, such as molecules and atoms and the even smaller, possibly imaginary pieces--smaller even than a dog's brain, if that's possible--that are part of what particle physicists call the building blocks of the universe, and honor by giving such alien names as "quarks."

This sounded terrific at first. No more struggling for hours to find the lowest airfare to East Orange, only to discover that it requires a 21 consecutive day stay which can not include Saturdays or Tuesdays. No more trying to stuff the entire contents of your walk-in closet into a carry-on bag. No more 16 day, high speed, nonstop trips going west to east across Kansas on I70. But no...it turns out that most of us are too large to be teleported using today's technology. What they actually sent, or moved, or reproduced, or whatever, was a photon. This is a very small first step.

All that they have actually done so far is prove that part of Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity was correct. This is one of the parts that Einstein himself apparently viewed as evidence that he was losing his grip.

He looked at his theory and said something like: "Yes. According to this it should be possible to take this strudel, smash it into very tiny, strangely named parts here in the kitchen, and then cause it to reassemble in the parlor under the piano...after we clean up the dust and cat fur." Then, within five minutes, he also said. "Anyone who thinks that something like that could be done would have to be nuttier than my cousin Gerta's fruit kuchen."

Einstein's conflicting feelings about his theory--his very own creation--should be familiar to any of us who looked carefully at our parents' faces when we were adolescents.

Still, the possibilities are intriguing. Who hasn't thought about how handy it would be to be able to simply flick a switch and remove--without causing actual death in a way which could land you in a prison cell with an overly friendly roommate--some annoying individual from the immediate vicinity of his or her life?

"Good morning. We just want you to know that God loves you, and if you have a few hours free we'd like to share some literature with you to...."

        BZZZZZT

You're in line at the Sooper King Albert's Bear Cub Food Mart, and after working your way slowly to where you can actually begin slapping your selections on the moving belt, the person in front of you pulls from the bottom of his cart a box big enough to hold King Henry VIII, and begins to sort coupons. You show restraint. Then he questions the prices scanned on the first eight items the clerk touches....

        BZZZZZT

It's another family get-together. Aunt Martha, now 97 years old but looking much older, has jacked up her rating on the cranky scale to a new high. You just want to shovel in some more turkey and stuffing before the salmonella reaches lethal levels, but she has picked you as the target of her rantings about the evils of FDR. She won't tolerate being ignored, punctuating each sentence with "...am I right?" or "...eh??" No time allowed for chewing or swallowing or you'll look as if you are some sort of heartless elder-hater.

BZZZZZT......she's back in front of the giant screen TV at Peaceful Sunny Vista Acres, a little surprised, but pleased to see that it's the Heavy Metal Hour on MTV.

Of course there would have to be some more conventionally positive uses of teleportation, though they probably wouldn't bring nearly as much satisfaction. Been waiting nine months and just felt the first twinge of a labor pain?    BZZZZZZT!! "Wah!"

"It's a girl...watch out, here comes the placenta! (SPLAT!) Turn that thing off!"

or…"Seems to be a kidney stone about the size of a hockey puck. We can wait until you...PASS IT NORMALLY...(cackling laughter follows)...or we can bombard you with sound waves until everything below your navel is the consistency of Gerber Strained Beets...or we have this new teleportation thing that...excuse me? Oh that's a shame. I'm told that your particular health plan says that teleportation is a little too pricey for their taste." BZZZZZT! And off goes your health plan's case manager on an unplanned visit to Anchorage. Thank goodness for the battery operated pocket model.

The crucial question, as always, is whether the human species is really the right one to be entrusted with something as slick as this. Look around, for goodness sake.

        "Where's the dog?"

"He just ate, so I buzzed him into the back yard."

"Oh no!! I left that thing on 'dispose' when I got rid of the trash! Look at the setting before you push that button!"

    "Oops! You're right. That's a shame...well, at least it wasn't the ferret."
